Mariposa Eyes

“Mariposa Eyes” is a handmade needle-felted butterfly that merges vibrant artistry with profound symbolism. This striking piece features a yellow butterfly adorned with blue accents and green vines, all crafted from wool, recycled sweater material, and plastic bags. The butterfly’s design represents transformation and cultural heritage, while the eyes on its wings and the mirror at its center invite viewers to engage in self-reflection and explore their personal growth.

    • Wool: For the primary structure and detailing of the butterfly.

    • Needle felting: The technique used to shape and assemble the wool.

    • Pipe cleaners: Added for structural support and shaping.

    • Reused plastic bags: Used for stuffing to enhance durability and sustainability.

    • Reused sweater: Provides padding and backing, adding texture and depth.

    • Reused mirror: Embedded at the center to encourage self-reflection.

    • Hot glue: Secures various components together.

    • Reused D-ring: Used for hanging and finishing the piece.

    • Currently featured at Fiestas de las Americas Art Gallery, September 19th-January 3rd

  • From the artist’s perspective, Mariposa Eyes is a deeply personal expression of their Guatemalan and Peruvian heritage, blended with their upbringing in Oklahoma. The vibrant butterfly design and use of recycled materials symbolize a journey of transformation and sustainability.

In Hispanic culture, butterflies are powerful symbols of renewal and the cyclical nature of life. The central mirror invites viewers to engage in self-reflection, encouraging them to see their own stories and contemplate their paths forward. Through this piece, the artist aims to inspire others to embrace their own growth and appreciate the significance of their personal evolution.
